The Challenge
The organization ran separate finance and supply-chain systems across three regional subsidiaries, with month-end consolidation done largely by hand. Lead time to close the books was long, and supply-chain data did not reconcile cleanly with finance, creating risk at reporting time.
The Approach
Designed a single Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations instance with a legal-entity-per-region model, standardized chart of accounts, and shared intercompany elimination rules. Built the integration layer so that existing regional warehouse and EDI systems did not need to be replaced immediately, reducing project risk and cost.
Integration Approach
Used Azure Logic Apps as the orchestration layer and Azure Service Bus for durable, ordered messaging between the regional warehouse systems and F&O's data entities, with dead-letter handling and replay tooling for failed messages. API Management fronted the inbound EDI endpoints for authentication, throttling, and schema validation before messages reached the integration layer.
Implementation Challenges
The main technical challenge was message ordering across regions with different EDI dialects. This was solved with per-partner transformation maps and a correlation-ID scheme so that out-of-order deliveries could still be reconciled correctly in F&O. Data migration from three legacy systems with inconsistent master data required a dedicated cleansing and matching pass before cutover.
The Outcome
Illustrative outcome: in a scenario like this, consolidating finance onto one platform and automating the warehouse/EDI integration can realistically cut month-end close time substantially and remove most manual reconciliation work — the kind of result this type of engagement is scoped to achieve.
Lessons Learned
Phased cutover by region (rather than a single big-bang go-live) is usually the lower-risk path for multi-entity F&O rollouts, even though it extends the overall timeline. Investing early in a canonical data model for intercompany transactions pays off disproportionately during UAT.
